cocoa-rockledge garden club annual MEETING/luncheon

The Cocoa-Rockledge Garden Club held their luncheon at BCC Plantearium, there were 41 in attendance and lunch was catered by Alex Montminy from Brevard Community Kitchens.

It's that time of the year again, when we look at all we have accomplished for the garden club year.  What did we forget?  How good a job did we do?

Some of the accomplishments for the gardening year were:

To help celebrate NATIONAL GARDEN CLUB WEEK The Spade & Trowel Circle purchased 225 flower potted plants from Rockledge Gardens.  These blooming plants were to help brighten up the homes & hearts of many meals on wheels recipents in our area.  The Dirt Daubers Circle did their part to let the community know about this special week, some of the members of the circle met at the garden center and created floral designs which were delivered to the cities of Cocoa & Rockledge City Hall, Police Departments, City Works Departments, Wuesthoff Hospital and the Cocoa and Merritt Island Libraries.

Fundraisers:  Spade & Trowel Circle held their very successful Annual Christmas Home Tour in November. The Straw Hat Circle held their annual Card Party & Craft Sale in October.  The Dirt Daubers Circle had  a garden tour "Behind the Garden Gate."  on May3, 7 beautiful gardens were on tour, garden center with refreshments & vendors in the garden.

Straw Hat Circle wins "ComeUNITY" Project a $750.00 matching funds grant.

The Cocoa-Rockledge Garden Club hosted the  FFGC District VI Fall Meeting - October 11, 2007.

The Spade & Trowel Circle had a  "Living" Giving Christmas Tree & collected $410.00 for Camp Wekiva.  Cocoa-Rockledge Garden Club donated funds to help with the refurbishing of the gardens at The Red Cross in Rockledge.  Cocoa-Rockledge Garden Club held Floral Design Classes; planting trees at Riverfront Park & Endeavor Elementary School.

Bringing in the Gold took place in all three circles - each circle added to their membership.

Cocoa-Rockledge Garden Club is sponsoring two new Junior Garden Clubs - St. Mark's Episcopal Academy with two Clubs - 12 members in each club for a total of 24 members.

The Dirt Dauber's Circle landscaped the Historic Derby Street Chapel in Cocoa Village.

COCOA-ROCKLEDGE GARDEN CLUB OBSERVES ARBOR DAY

In celebration of Arbor Day 2008, the Cocoa Rockledge Garden Club (CRGC) presented Endeavour Magnet School, Cocoa, Florida, with a Live Oak tree for planting. The dedication was held on February 22. Attending from Cocoa-Rockledge Garden Club were President Evelyn Fraley, Fleet Lindley, Chairman of the Trees committee, and Jo Compton, Treasurer.  Principal Mecheail Giombetti, John Chybion, Debie Pringle, & Jean Bartleson were among those attending from Endeavour.  Both President Fraley & Fleeta choose to read a poem as part of the dedication ceremony.

After the dedication Principal Giombetti, & John Chybion took Evelyn, Fleeta & Jo on a tour of several of the class rooms, to see the murals in the hallways,  the lab & the science room, to view a video & to tour the gardens.  The ladies of the garden club came away feeling special; what a grand tour! The Principal & the staff at Endeavour are doing a fantastic job working hand in hand with the students who are eager to learn.  It's a special privilege for CRGC to be a partner in this "Endeavor."

Students at Endeavour have been busy, they have wonderful gardens, an ABC garden - flowers for all the letters A - Z;  Butterfly Garden - Butterfly plants; The Lifecycle Garden;  Rainbow Garden - all the colors of the rainbow in order;  Flower Garden - in the shape of a flower and the container gardens house the "Five Senses" Gardens, for example, plants included mint for taste, lion's ear and lamb's ear for hearing, lemon balm and rosemary for smell, soft chenille and rough black-eyed susans for feel and a vivid red and purple bat face plant for sight.  This is a wonderful way for them to learn to garden.  Parents & grandparents may be surprised to find that they too will learn something from their children in the garden.  Kids have a wonderful way of looking at things in a different light.  The time spent in the garden is one of the best ways to spend quality time with your children.  Getting the youngest generation interest in gardening can be as simple as giving them some quick sprouting seeds and a small patch of ground to work with!  Gardening opens a whole new world to children and ENDEAVOUR MAGNET SCHOOL has certainly accomplished this in teaching their students "you reap what you sow".
