STRAW HAT CIRCLE - WINS "ComeUNITY" PROJECT  GRANT

"ComeUNITY" PROJECT

The Principal Financial Group in partnership with National Garden Clubs funded a $50,000 Civic Development Grant Program "Let’s Go Native" using local native plants. Earthy Spalding, who initiated “ComeUNITY” Project, and with the support of Joyce Forino submitted an application.

"ComeUNITY" Project won a $750.00 matching funds grant. The $750.00 grant was the largest grant received in the state of Florida. The "ComeUNITY" Project is a Healing Garden at the old Monroe High School in Cocoa. The first phase is a Culinary Garden and the second phase will be the Healing Garden with flowers, small edibles, rock and butterfly gardens. The garden will provide learning experiences in the areas of gardening and life-skillls like composting, plant recognition, importance of Florida native plants to Florida eco-system, working together/teamwork, respect, responsibility, self-control and nurturing.

The objectives of this project are:

1. To create a beautiful green-space in the community,

2. To encourage a neighborhood-wide commitment to community

service by creating a beautiful green-space and

3. To encourage youth, adults and senior citizens to work together

in a healthful, safe, nurturing, learning environment.

Membership in brief:

Youth--make a commitment to working in the garden weekly,

Adults--make a commitment to work in the garden on a regular schedule with

their youth partner(s) and

Elders--make a commitment to share their life and gardening experiences with

their youth partner(s).

Straw Hat Circle is very excited to be a small part of this project and look forward to helping see it through to completion.

STRAW HAT FIELD TRIP - APRIL 9, 2008

Straw Hat members and two guests had an hour guided tour of the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary.  We started at the Butterfly/Dragonfly Garden and headed along the Biodiversity Loop.  Along the way we crossed the Mesic Trail and stopped to see the Addison/Ellison Canal along the Atlantic Coast Ridge.  After the tour, the ladies enjoyed lunch at Dixie Crossroads.

STRAW HAT CIRCLE MEETING - FEBRUARY 13, 2008

At the business meeting of Straw Hat Circle, funds were disbursed to SEEK ($80.00) and Penny Pines ($68.00).  Theresa Riley of Rockledge Gardens presented a wonderful program on "Things to Do in Your Garden in "Winter" in Brevard County".  She introduced a few easy to care for plants--both for indoors and out in the garden.  Since it was the day before Valentines Day, Theresa had a list of plants that symbolize love (and other things).  Debbie Kelley was the luck winner of the Valentine container garden.

Evelyn Lemanski and Fran Weizenecker were the hostesses for February.  They served dainty little tea sandwiches and heart-shaped brownies and mini cranberry muffins.  It was a very enjoyable day!
